“True enjoyment comes from activity of the mind and exercise of the body; the two are united. “

Good [insert time-of-day] Readers & Adventurers!
I’m Ayana Shearer, a full-time student and aspiring naturalist. Current undergrad, Botany major, at Humboldt State University (HSU), in the heart of the redwoods!
I also have interests in Soils, Geology, Conservation Biology, Ecology, Biogeography, Entimology Chemistry, Astronomy, and Psychology
My college career began in Psychology. I was so sure in high school I would attain my PhD; but after my first year I realized that I have more of an interest for hard sciences (Biology and Chemistry for example). When I met my husband in 2014, I was dabbling with other majors, and he introduced me to the world of Botany by “breaking down the green blur.” He taught me some plants around town and recommended I take the introductory Botany course. After acing that class, I knew the Botany department was where I belonged.
What’s in a name? As simple as Athyrium felix-femmina (lady fern) being one of my favorite plants
Athyrium’s Journey really began a few years ago when we gave up our apartment to travel the Pacific Northwest. The trip was very inspiring, so much so that I wanted to share that inspiration with others like and unlike myself: those whom have explored the world around them and those whom have not. And then A.Journey became so much more than that. A blog where you can discover new places to travel AND learn new things about the natural world.
